Born in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). Veterinary Degree (DVM) (1982) and PhD (1985) at Cordoba University. Postdoctoral Research Humboldt Fellowship at Institut für Pathologie, TIHO, Hannover- Germay, 1986-87. Postdoc Veterinary Pathology (Cornell University, NY, USA, 1994). European Collegue Veterinary Pathology Specialist (DECVP, 1995). European Collegue Veterinary Zoological Medicine (Wild Life Population Health) (DECZM, 2012). Veterinary Anatomic Pathology Diagnostician (since 1985).

Dr. Fernandez has been assistant and later, associate professor at University Cordoba (Spain) and Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and since 1992, is full professor of Histology and Veterinary Pathology at University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (www.ulpgc.es), Canary Islands (Spain).

He has been involved in management as Dean and University Vicepresident as well in numerous national and international university and research organizations. He was recoginized in 2008, with the Canary Islands Award in Research and Innovation. And currently, is also Scientific President of La Palma Biosphere Worldwide Reserve (www.lapalmabiofera.es).

He has been involved mainly in infectious diseases (pathology and pathogenesis), like Bovine Virus Diarrhoea / Mucosal Disease (BVD/MD), African Swine Fever (ASF), Avian infectious diseases, Small Ruminant Mycoplasmosis, and during last 20 years has applied Veterinary Pathology to stranded cetaceans in the Canary Islands as well as part of task force Unit linked to International Organizations, like International Whaling Commission (IWC), Ascobams, Accobams, International Union for Nature Conservation (IUCN), being currently his Institute of Animal Health (www.iusa.eu) an OIE collaboration Centre for Marine Mammal Health in a join centre with IZP-Italy.

Currently, Professor Fernandez is director at Institute of Animal Health and Food Safety (University of Las Palmas Gran Canaria-www.ulpgc.es), a research and postgraduate center dealing with research and services on Animal Health and Food Safety (www.iusa.eu). Researcher. P.I. and collaborator in more than 45 regional, national and European (R & D) projects. 40 R & D Contracts and Agreements with public and private companies. Indexed scientific publications in English (JCR): 220 (3 in Nature and one replay in Science). 80 scientific works (Technical reports and non-peer-reviewed publications in Spanish). Due to the health emergency caused by the epidemic of COVID-19, and in view of the evolution of the situation generated by its transmission and attending to the recommendations issued by the different Health Administrations, the Board of the European Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (EAVLD), according to the Organizing Committee, has determined the postponement of the celebration of the 6th EAVLD Congress, urging responsibility and prudence in this extraordinary situation. The Congress will be held in Seville on October 25-27, 2021.
